Mr Stuart J Calder MB ChB, FRCS, MD, FRCS (Tr. And Orth)

Mr. Calder has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 1998. He specialises entirely in treating knee conditions. His particular interests include sports knee injuries and the treatment of arthritis. He has undertaken several thousand surgical knee procedures. He works for Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (a substantive NHS consultant post, with a busy knee practice) as well as undertaking private practice. He holds an Honorary Lectureship at Leeds University Medical School.

He graduated from Bristol University Medical School in 1986. He trained in orthopaedics from 1991-1998. He spent time in Yorkshire, and 2 years in clinical and laboratory research at in Leicester, 1993-4, from which he was awarded an MD higher degree.

He spent a year on a training fellowship with a leading international knee surgeon in Australia, 1997-8 (Brisbane Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Centre, Dr. Myers). During this time he gained experience in all aspects of knee surgery, especially sports knee injuries.

Mr. Calder's interests in knee surgery include sports injuries (from amateur to elite professional), arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, ligament reconstruction, arthritis surgery (total and unicompartment knee replacement), tibial osteotomy and patello-femoral problems. Recently he has been performing meniscal augmentation and transplant. He values being able to treat patients across the whole spectrum of age and knee conditions, allowing for continuing care.

Mr. Calder is heavily involved in the teaching and training of junior orthopaedic surgeons. He has organized courses on arthroscopic knee surgery and knee ligament reconstruction for many years, and teaches on other courses around the country. He supervises and jointly trains a senior knee fellow.

He keeps up to date with current concepts in knee surgery by attending national and international meetings.

He has published numerous research papers in the past, and is currently involved with a group researching into mesenchymal stem cells and their potential for arthritis treatment.
